Base Commander’s Log—November 07
Greetings, Crew!

By the time you read this, Halloween will be over and Thanksgiving right around the corner. Then there’s Starbase Indy Con as usual. I don’t know about you, but it seems to me we are flying at warp speed toward the end of the year—amazing!

Flying along with us starting this month is new Security member Adam Zalonis of Newport News, Virginia—welcome aboard, Adam! We’re glad to have you with us!

Also, as the weather turns colder and we turn to more indoor activities, I think it’s a great time for our members to renew their interest in writing fan fiction. That’s how our club really started, you know. If you don’t yet have a character profile created or need more info on writing with us for our Historical Documents (ala Galaxy Quest), see your division chief. You should also visit our online forum to read the previous stories before you chime in—just so you have an idea of what went on before and who the other members’ characters are.

Well, I’m outta here for the month—have fun creating, and I can’t wait to read your contributions!

Addy J

The Enterprising Voyage Continues

By: Laura Begley

One thing about being a Sci-Fi geek is that it's sort of fun to see where some of our favorite Star Trek actors turn up. For example, from the Voyager crew I've found Robert Duncan McNeill, aka "Tom Paris," is now a Producer and Director on the new spy spoof show, Chuck. Tim Russ, one of our favorite Vulcans, is now co-starring as Frank the doorman in the new Christina Applegate sitcom, Samantha Who? Robert Beltran, aka "Chokotay," has been in an episode of Medium and is in post-production on a movie called Patriotville.

Of course, we can't forget about our captain, Kate Mulgrew, and her recent stint on The Black Donellys, or our darling holographic doctor, Robert Picardo, who has been quite the busy man with stints on both SG1 and Atlantis, nor should Jeri Ryan's long running role on Boston Public and Shark be overlooked.

In a follow-up for Enterprise crew, Linda Park, aka "Hoshi Sato," had a co-starring role in the short-lived Jeff Goldblum series Raines and currently co-stars in a new series, The Women's Murder Club. Dominic Keating, ("Lt Reed") has been in several recent episodes of the current season of Heroes, as well as having a role in the movie Beowulf, which is due to be released in mid-November. John Billingsley ("Dr. Phlox") has been keeping himself hopping with recent appearances in the new time-traveling series Journeyman, the long-running CSI, and 24. Anthony Montgomery ("Ensign Mayweather") is filming along with Garrett Wang (Voyager's "Ensign Kim") in a comedic movie due to be released late in 2008 called Why Am I Doing This?

Keep your eyes open for more stars popping up where you least expect them - you just never know when you'll glimpse a familiar face, either in front of the screen or behind the scenes!

Starfleet Medical

A new toothbrush has been created that scans the mouth while brushing and, with the aid of a computer, shows the areas that have been brushed and the areas that need more attention.  This revolutionary development in dentistry comes from Britain!

On the Big Screen

William Shatner’s website stated that the Original two-part TOS series "The Menagerie" will be broadcast on the big screen in High Definition for one night only; November 13, 2007 at nearly 300 theatres across the US and Canada.  Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online at FathomEvents.com.  I just discovered on StarTrek.com that November 15 has been added as another date.  The closest theater to Greater Cincinnati showing this is in Lexington.

In an interview posted on TrekMovie.com, writer Roberto Orsi tells TrekMovie about Shatner being in the movie.  He tells TrekMovie, "What J.J. said at Comic-Con is still true. We are actively perusing [sic] looking for a way to make a part that is worthy of him and that is not pandering to either his role in Star Trek or to the fans."  Is it the company line to keep fans at bay or will Kirk finally be back?

Karma Science

Fall is the best time for stargazing. Going back to standard time allows for more viewing in the evening and with cooler weather there is far less heat "ripples" distorting the stars.  Orion is very visible in the early hours this month.  Look directly overhead about 6AM.  To the East, the brightest object in the sky, is Venus but also in the east, and very bright also, is the planet Saturn.  Mercury will be visible in the east for about a week beginning November 8.

In the evenings, Jupiter is still bright in the southwest but very low on the horizon. Mars enters November rising about four hours after sunset, but ends the month rising just two hours after sunset, placing it in prime time evening hours and very bright. The Leonid Meteor shower is November 17 and 18 but it will e very hard to see.  Find a dark sky area if you intend to watch this show.  Best viewing times are midnight to sunrise.
Saving the best for last - a chance to see the Comet Holmes.  Look for the constellation Perseus.
