Commander’s Log—July 08
Greetings, crew!
First of all
this month, I want to
personally thank all of you that participated in the SBK elections
and chose to retain the command staff as it stands until June of
2010. I know I speak for us all when I say we’re grateful for your
continued support!
And now,
moving on…
Enjoying
dinner and
the Star Trek concert with the SBK crew June 28th at Riverbend
was AWESOME! Bob Picardo and John DeLancie were in top form hosting
the Cincinnati Pops, and I have never before seen Erich Kunzel
conduct, but I thought he was incredible!
Both Dave and
I
were trumpet players in high school, so the brass section is the
first thing we always hear in an orchestra...and the Star Trek
music has a lot of amazing trumpet solos. :: sigh ::
But hearing
the
original TOS theme, the DS9 theme, Ilia's theme from STTMP as well as
the Klingon sections of ST II and ST VI made me itch to write fan
fiction. It was indescribable how it felt to sit there almost inside
the music at Riverbend with a breeze coming off the water and
fireflies flirting in and out of the trees all around us.
Many thanks
again
to First Office Lisa of USS Maximillian in Columbus, who made sure
we got the discount ticket info for Trek fans. She and the rest of
the crew we met from the "Mighty Max" made us feel so
welcome and we are looking forward to hanging with them in the near
future! Honestly, it's so nice when other clubs are friendly--we so
rarely see that.
I hope to see
all
of you at one of the summer events First Officer Dave has planned! In
the meantime, take care, everyone!

Recreation
June was a busy month for Starbase Karma. A group of us viewed
"Indiana Jones" in Newport on June 8. On June 28 Jan
Popp, Joy Jones, Michelle Tuchiano, Aurelia Burkette, David Jones and
Tashi Grant attended the Cincinnati Pops concert featuring John de
Lancie and Robert Picardo. The concert featured music and trvia from
the Star Trek movies and TV series.
Next on the agenda is the
Starbase Karma summer picnic. The event will take place at the
Jones ranch on July 12 at 2:00PM. Karma will supply the
meat.
Please bring a side and a beverage. We will eat around 4:00
then retire to the basement for a viewing of......Galaxy Quest!
I can hardly wait!
On August 9 we will travel to dark sky
territory for a night of stargazing. We have not yet selected a
site and are open to suggestion. Maybe someone should contact
the Cincinnati Astonomical Society to see if we can use their site
near Bridgetown. Dave, will you take care of that?
We
will now begin planning the rest of this year and into 2009.
What activities would you like to see? We have discussed a
pizza crawl, malts at midnight and of course movie marathons.
Keep in mind we have members all over the country. There is no
reason why we can't all share a malt at midnight even though we may
be miles apart.

Heroes
News from USS Aquila
Heroes has started to shoot
the next 25 episodes on May 1st. Bruce Boxleitner is touted to
appear on Heroes
paired with a female series regular.
Brea Grant will also be playing
a character called Joy who is
also known as the Speedster and is very quick at getting herself in
and out of messes. The new season will still stay
focused on characters from the pilot episode in spite of the new
characters who are being introduced.
:: cough ::
Well, I didn't want to say anything but yes, they are
doing a character based on me, LOL!

Computer Corner
A few months ago, I recommended getting ZoneAlarm Firewall if you
didn't have anything other than Windows' included firewall.
Recently, Microsoft made an update to Windows XP that clashed with
ZoneAlarm and blocked
all internet traffic. There is now an update
from ZoneAlarm to fix that problem.

Very interesting to see
'who' your friends are!
(10-16
points) You are Garfield :
You are very comfortable, easy going,
and you definitely know how to have fun but sometimes you take it to
an extreme. You always know what you are doing and you are always in
control of your life. Others may not see things as you do, but that
doesn't mean that you always have to do what is right. Try to
remember, your happy spirit may hurt you or others.
(17-23
points) You are Snoopy:
You are fun; you are very cool and
popular. You always know what's in and you ' re never out of style ,
you are good at knowing how to satisfy everyone else. You have
probably disappeared for a few days more than once but you always
come home with the family values that you learned. Being
married and having children are important to you, but only after you
have had your share of fun times.
(24-28 points) You are
Elmo:
You have lots of friends and you are also popular, always
willing to give advice and help out a person in need. You are
very optimistic and you always see the bright side of things. Some
good advice: try not to be too much of a dreamer. Dreaming too big
could cause many conflicts in your life.
(29-35 points) You
are Sponge Bob Square Pants:
You are the classic person th at
everyone loves. You are the best friend that anyone could ever
have and never wants to lose. You never cause harm to anyone
and they would never misunderstand your feelings. Life is a
journey, it's funny and calm for the most part. Stay away from
traitors and jealous people and you will be stress free.
(36-43
points) You are Charlie Brown:
You are tender, you fall in love
quickly but you are also very serious about all relationships.
You are a family person. You call your Mom every Sunday. You
have many friends and may occasionally forget a few Birthdays.
Don't confuse your passion with reality.
(44-50 points) You
are Dexter:
You are smart and definitely a thinker... Every
situation is fronted with a plan. You have a brilliant mind. You
demonstrate very strong family principles. You maintain a
stable routine but never ignore a bad situation when it comes. Try to
do less over thinking every once in a while to spice things up a bit
with spontaneity!
