Base Commander’s Log—February 08 I have some important news, and I took an extra month to think over how I feel and what I want to say about some recent events. As I sit here today typing this, I’m content. Keep that in mind as you read on. Adm. Michelle Turchiano sent me an e-mail a few days ago resigning from Starbase Karma. Her reasons were an upheaval in her life which resulted in her having very little time and resources to devote to the club, and in her best judgment resigning was the correct thing to do. From my perspective, it was a great loss. However, I do respect Michelle for being up front enough to tell me she would not be able to continue serving in the First Officer position and give her best to it. I appreciate her candor, but she will be sorely missed. One of the traditional ways in which clubs replace an officer in the chain of command is to bring the remaining officers up a step to fill the breach—and so I’ve decided that Dave Jones will move into the First Officer position, Jan Popp into Second Officer, and we are bringing Laura Begley into the chain of command as Third Officer. These three members, like Michelle, have shown incredible devotion to the club from day one, so I have complete confidence that they will perform in their new duties as they always have in the old. However, that is not the only major change we will be making in 2008. Over the past year, Starbase Karma has reached a plateau of activity. To combat this, the command staff has decided to implement some major changes and projects that we feel will get us moving again. The first item I want to tell you about is an election, which will take place in June. I feel we have a number of members who have remained on the outskirts of club activities, who are highly intelligent and motivated, and would make great leaders. I’m hoping the next few months will give us a better idea of who they are. The basics of the election will be as follows:
I know you will have more questions, so be sure to follow the new Chain of Communication for answers. (And by the way everyone, please check your own information at this time in the Chain of Communication Document and report to the Records Officer any errors—thanks!) I hope you’re all as excited as I am about the wonderful growth we see coming from the year ahead—it’s going to be SO much fun! Love you guys! Addy J SPECTACULAR SKY SHOW Submitted by Tina
Whitehair For the past several months, dazzling Venus has been prominent in our morning sky. And about a week ago, brilliant Jupiter also began to emerge from out of the glare of the Sun. The two planets are currently rising out of the east-southeast horizon about two hours before sunrise. For full story click here
Starfleet On Tour
By: Janice Popp According to the January/February 2008 issue of Star
Trek Magazine, See Touring Productions is creating a small traveling
theme park about Star Trek. Recreations of the Original and TNG
bridges will be recreated. There will be simulator rides as well as props
and costumes. These are items that will never be auctioned. Much of the
Tour will be interactive. Visitors can read about two minutes of dialog in
front of a greenscreen and the Tour will edit that into an episode from
TOS. You can take the DVD home for a souvenir.
On the Big Screen New Star Trek Movie Slideshow!
Review: GRAVITY GRAVITY A culture of single cell organisms regenerates out of control and infects the space station crew with agonizing, deadly results. The crew struggles to contain the virus while NASA struggles to bring the crew home. But there will be no rescue. The contagion now threatens Earth’s population and the astronauts are stranded in orbit, quarantined aboard the station where they are dying one by one. Tess Gerritsen’s novel starts with quite a bit of character development. In fact, it reads like a soap opera. A divorced couple that is still madly in love with each other? If this were a movie it would be on Lifetime. A bit sappy but interspersed with government intrigue and action on the International Space Station to make this an exciting read. The book is rich in detail and expertly woven. There is quite a bit of medical and scientific jargon in this book, necessary to make the story real, but Gerritsen uses it in a way that makes it easy to understand. Gerritsen is no Rowling. She does not reach for a solution to the problem in the last few pages. The solution is at the beginning of the book so it comes as no surprise. We see that team of engineers struggle to succeed in their mission then join forces with NASA for the final outcome. *Recommended*
