Base Commander’s
Log—December 08 How are your holidays going so far? Our Thanksgiving was awesome: so much wonderful time spent with family. And, you know, even some of our SBK family stopped by on that Weds night to enjoy Monty Python and the Holy Grail and some My Hero eps with us. It really brought home, for me, what a symbol of family we all are to each other. Thanks to all that were able to attend and to those who couldn’t come but wished they could. I can’t imagine a better fan-family to have than all of you! Happy Holidays and see you soon! Addy J
LOST RETURNS!
Set your "Lost"
countdown clock! ABC has set the show's season premiere date.
The show will open its fifth season with a two-hour premiere starting at
9 p.m. ET Wednesday, Jan. 21. It marks a return to Wednesdays for the
show.
Other than the date and the episode titles -- "Because You Left" and "The Lie" -- ABC hasn't released any information about the new season. It's expected to run for 17 episodes -- with the 17th partially making up for last year's strike-shortened 14-episode season -- which would put the season finale in late April or early May. "Lost" ended its fourth season by showing how the Oceanic Six got off the island and formed their cover story, with flash-forwards showing all six people decidedly unhappy with their post-rescue lives and realizing they have to go back. Which could be a problem, as the finale also showed Ben (Michael Emerson) moving the island to points unknown. And then there's the matter of Locke (Terry O'Quinn) being revealed as the man in the coffin.
ASTRONOMY If you have taken a look at the night sky lately, you've noticed two very bright objects in the west. The brightest of the two is the planet Venus. Just above Venus, and nearly as bright, was the planet Jupiter. They are moving closer together and by mid-December will have changed positions in the view. These planets set just after sunset in my area so take a look in the early evening about 6:30PM. By the end of the year, these two planets will be below the western horizon before sunset but, to our good viewing fortune, Mars will be rising in the east. A great sky map can be found at www.heavens-above.com Key in your location for a sky map that reflects your night sky.
Spam & Cyberscams Scams are everywhere these days, and it's ridiculously easy to fall for them. A heads-up from Joy brought my attention to this new version, and I thought it wise to post. It's a variation I haven't encountered yet. I have, however, received calls from automated machines claiming to be from my (non-specific) credit card company with an offer for a special, lower interest rate. Since they called the wrong phone number and didn't name the bank, I hung up. I've also gotten calls claiming to be "the last warning" that my car's manufacturer's warranty is about to expire. Fascinating, since my car is almost six years old. About two years ago, Regions Bank and RBC divided up AmSouth between them; my parents got a message on the answering machine claiming to need them to log into their (non-existent) account on a website setup to sound similar to Regions (and which had lifted the web design from Regions' website). In that instance, the phone company had caught on; the caller ID read "This is a scam." There are several more well-written entries at Snopes (not to mention the FBI's site); scammers will use phone, email, snailmail - whatever gets them what they want, at your expense. Watch out for phony security certificate messages, mail-order brides, weird lotteries, account shut-down warnings, and too-good-to-be-true "jobs." I fell for one of those at Craigslist, though I was suspicious enough to insist on seeing a catalog, and discontinued contact when they consistently ignored my request for one. Craigslist started posting warnings about that sort of thing some time after I reported the incident to the FBI; I probably wasn't the only one, and I suspect someone at the FBI may have said something to TPTB at Craigslist. What does spam have to do with this? Well, email scams are typically sent as mass-email spam. Spammers harvest as many accurate email addresses as they can and send out messages in bulk hit-and-run sprees. Part of the solution is learning to recognize and ignore scam messages, but there is more you can do:
