Base Commander’s Log—December 07
Greetings, Crew!
As I sit down to write this my head is filled with
thoughts of Thanksgiving and this year’s Starbase Indy—it’s amusing to
think by the time you read this that it will all be over and we’ll be
headed at warp speed towards Christmas and the New Year!
But right now, while gratitude is uppermost in my mind, I’d like to
mention a few folks I’m particularly grateful for: First Officer Michelle
Turchiano, who saw me through my crazy cuttlefish stage with hardly a
murmur this year; J Second Officer Dave Jones; my own personal hero in
Away Missions; Third Officer Jan Popp, keeper of the keys to the Treasury;
Communications Chief Laura Begley, the sane mind behind the running of
Yesterday’s News; Comp Ops Chief Chrystalline Lauryl, who saved me from
total meltdown when YN changed formats this year; Media Relations Officer
Gary Pilkington for hosting Reel Reads throughout the year; Security Chief
John Barnes, who is always there with a joke or article to share; and last
but not least Cadet Gary Pierce, with his “man on the street” updates on
what’s happening in sci-fi.
Every one of you folks is a bright star in the SBK firmament, and I’m
happy to know and love you.
Happy Holidays all!

The Venus Express probe, launched by the

evidence that Venus once had more water than it does today.

Lester Green, of Connecticut, flooded forty acres in hopes of a bountiful
ice harvest. In February, while cutting the ice, he came across three
chicken eggs frozen in a block of ice. He thawed and HATCHED the eggs. The
chicks were unusual in that they had fur! Unfortunately, the chicks did
not make it through the sweltering summer.

One week after a breakthrough finding, scientists report they can
reprogram human skin cells to behave like embryonic stem cells without a
growth factor known to cause cancer.

Are aliens among us? Alien microbes may be hiding in plain sight. Although
they might look like ordinary bacteria, their biochemistry could involve
exotic amino acids or different elemental building blocks.

Now, THIS is really fascinating - it's rather dazzling to see it presented this way. Very Interesting

I CERTAINLY THOUGHT THIS WAS ENLIGHTENING. BEYOND OUR SUN ... IT'S A BIG UNIVERSE.

ANTARES IS THE 15TH BRIGHTEST STAR IN THE SKY. IT IS MORE THAN 1000 LIGHT YEARS AWAY.
NOW HOW BIG ARE YOU? ------------------------------------------------------------------
NOW TRY TO WRAP YOUR MIND AROUND THIS.........
THIS IS A HUBBLE TELESCOPE ULTRA DEEP FIELD INFRARED VIEW OF COUNTLESS "ENTIRE" GALAXIES BILLIONS OF LIGHT-YEARS AWAY.

BELOW IS A CLOSE UP OF ONE OF THE DARKEST REGIONS OF THE PHOTO ABOVE.

HUMBLING, ISN'T IT?
NOW HOW BIG ARE YOU? AND HOW BIG ARE THE THINGS THAT UPSET YOU TODAY?
KEEP LIFE IN PERSPECTIVE.
AND DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF!
