Base Commander’s Log—April 08
Greetings, crew...
This month I have some sad news to
impart. It will mean nothing to some of you, but a lot to others, so bear
with me.
I received some news from the CO of USS
Jurassic, Carolyn Donner. It seems a former crewmate of mine aboard USS
Aquila has passed away, Dennis Schwendemann. Some of you, I’m sure, will
remember Dennis. What’s even sadder is that he was apparently ill for
some time, but no one in any of the clubs knew—and it was someone from his
acting troupe in Ft. Thomas that contacted Carolyn.
Now, I’m telling you that to tell you
this. I need you all to know that you’re very dear to me. I didn’t get
the chance to tell Dennis—and I don’t want to miss the opportunity to tell
you. I love you guys. You’re my fandom family. Please don’t forget that
and don’t forget to tell your other friends among the crew you feel that
way about them.
Take care,
Addy

The Fahrenheit 451 Question &
Answers
Last month, inspired by the SBK Reel Reads away team
mission to see the movie Fahrenheit 451 we asked, “If you could
only memorize one book in your life, and your memory would then be the
only source of that book until you died--what book would you be?
Third Officer Laura Begley answered:
I'm going to go with a childhood favorite: Anne of Green Gables
by LM Montgomery. LM has a wonderful descriptive ability, the character of
Anne is adorable, It takes place around the 1880's I think, on Prince
Edward Island in Canada - she's an orphan who is taken in at age 11 by an
older couple (brother & sister) who sent for a boy but got Anne instead.
She's a funny, honest, talkative, intelligent, and imaginative girl and
manages to get into some of the oddest incidents! It's a wonderful series
of books (and miniseries).
Commanding Officer Joy Jones answered:
The very first book I fell in love with had to be the one: Black
Beauty, by Anna Sewell. I learned so much from it—how cruelly animals
are treated, but also how loyal they can be. It was the first experience I
had with being inside a character’s thinking, and even more valuable a
thing to learn as a writer.
Just thought of what book you would be? Write to us for the next issue
of YN!

Starbase Indy's Goodbye
Thank you to all of those that joined Starbase Indy Thanksgiving 2007. Ray
Park was an awesome guest and we have had nothing but praise from our
attendees. He was incredibly gracious with our attendees and even offered
a once in a life time experience for many of our little SBI attendees by
giving them one-on-one lightsaber tips on stage. The crowds enjoyed
talking to David Reddick and watching him work at his table and the
audience laughed until their sides hurt while they watched The Great
LukeSki. We also enjoyed seeing some of our favorites like Gary Wood and
George “Lucas” Starkey and meeting new funny-guy MC Ned Keitt.
Although we tried something a little different this year with Starbase
Indy: The Anti Con, the idea was to try and rally the fans together to
keep the interest and the love for our Thanksgiving Weekend convention
going. Just four years since we brought back Starbase Indy, we are
saddened to say that the Anti Con (aka the Twelfth Generation) will be the
last Starbase Indy.
At
this year’s heavily attended “Con Chair Hour” on Sunday afternoon, the
staff of Starbase Indy announced the sad news of the final year. There was
a great deal of discussion and tears as everyone tried to figure out a way
to make this work. The consensus seemed to be that the convention itself
worked great and that everyone that attended had a GREAT time; the biggest
problem was letting people know we were there.
Many of our “regular” Starbase Indy goers were asking, “What will we do on
Thanksgiving Weekend?” Many attendees said they would be coming back
whether there was an SBI or not. I can’t tell you how much statements like
this means to my staff and I. It is comments like this that tell us that
the convention meant as much to you as it did to us.
As mentioned that weekend, there was some talk of another convention
promoter coming to Indianapolis during our wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.
Because nothing was official, I was unable to drop any names. After many
discussions with an established convention promoter and the Marriott, I am
finally able to announce that there will indeed be a convention in
Indianapolis Thanksgiving 2008. Although this will not be a “Starbase
Indy” convention, I truly feel that there will be aspects of Starbase Indy
that will boil over into their style of a convention experience. So… drum
roll please… Vulkon Entertainment will for the first time open their doors
on Indianapolis territory November 21, 2008!
Vulkon
has been holding conventions since 1979! Although I have not attended any
of their events, money willing, I plan on attending their Columbus
convention this May. I am sure they will do some things different than we
do, but obviously anyone that has been around for nearly 30 years knows a
thing or two about entertaining their attendees! And, don’t worry about
too much change, many of my staff will be attending Vulkon’s version of
Starbase Indy this November so there should be plenty of familiar faces. I
also know for a fact that Barfleet will once again be in attendance, so if
you are a Barfleet member, you will not want to miss another fabulous
party.
I know this seems like sad news, but in my heart I feel that Vulkon will
be a good fit for our Thanksgiving sci-fi hunger. Remember, November isn’t
just for eating turkey; it’s also about family and even more importantly
friends with a little sci-fi twist. ;) I look forward to seeing you all
this November!
It’s been an honor getting to know and working with all of you.

SIDE NOTE **
The picture to the left is of a long time Starbase Indy attendee "Data"
Dan. I always remember seeing Dan every Thanksgiving weekend dressed like
Data. He was gracious enough to dress like Data one final time, just for
me, at the last convention. Thank you Dan for keeping those warm feelings
of the "old" Starbase Indy alive for me; I will never forget getting to
see you as Data Dan one last time.
Finally, I have talked to many of you over the last four years, just
because I am no longer running SBI, I hope you will keep in touch with me
via email or instant message. The Starbase Indy website and email will
remain in place the rest of 2008 or you can reach me via one of the
following instant message services.

New Star Wars Movie Coming
Lucas happy to oblige 'Star Wars' fans
The Associated Press
Fans never seem to get their fill of "Star Wars," and George Lucas is
happy to oblige.
Lucas offered a glimpse into the latest creation in his sci-fi
universe at the theater-owners convention ShoWest in Las Vegas on
Thursday, showing a sequence from "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," a
computer-animated movie due in theaters Aug. 15. It will be followed
by a TV series of the same name, to air on the Cartoon Network and
TNT this fall.
